That’s it, we’re starting to see more clearly! A new decree concerning vaping has just been published in the Official Journal: it specifies the places where electronic cigarettes are authorized. It will come into force from October 1, 2017.
Concretely, from the autumn, the e-cigarette will be banned in certain places for collective use such as: “schools and establishments intended for the reception, training and accommodation of minors”. Ditto in “closed means of public transport”: train, metro, bus. So far, nothing surprising.
More surprisingly, the electronic cigarette will be banned from staying in “closed and covered workplaces for collective use”: clearly, vaping in the open space is over, but the practice remains authorized within the limits of a personal office.
Tolerated in restaurants and bars
On the other hand, the electronic cigarette remains tolerated in “the premises which welcome the public”: for example hospitals (!), Stadiums, hotels, restaurants and bars are concerned. However, the use of e-cigarettes remains subject to the establishment’s internal regulations: if “visible signs” are put in place by the person in charge of the premises, vaping may be prohibited.
Failure to comply with the ban, the vapoteur is exposed to a second class fine (total amount: 35 €). And the person in charge of a place targeted by the ban on vaping will have to pay a fine of € 68 if he does not install the appropriate signage.
As a reminder, according to some experts, the electronic cigarette would be bad for health: it would destroy in particular the cells of the mouth, increase the risk of stroke and could cause cardiovascular disorders. In France, vaping is gaining ground: 7.7 to 9.2 million French people have already experimented with electronic cigarettes and between 1.1 and 1.9 million are regular vapers. 8% of 25-34 year olds are daily users.
