Gym etiquette and more
It is well known: half an hour of exercise a day is healthy. Only it often doesn’t happen, so you boldly decide to sign up at a gym. But which school is right for you? And is there such a thing as a dress code and etiquette? We sorted it out for you, so that you can start a healthy life fully prepared.
Your decision is made: ‘I’m joining a gym’. But, how do you approach that?
- Check the website of the gym to see what the school offers. Does it have an activity that suits you?
- Ask for a trial lesson. Is the activity right for me?
- Ask for a tour and taste the atmosphere. What facilities does the gym have (showers, bar, restaurant, childcare)?
- Ask if the staff is qualified.
- Ask what the subscription conditions are. Does the school use annual and/or monthly subscriptions? And what to do in case of illness, relocation or injuries?
- Ask whether the gym has a National Fitness Recognition Scheme (LERF). The quality mark ensures that the school meets basic requirements in the field of safety, hygiene, emergency facilities and company emergency response.
Beautiful or easy
“A gym is for young, tight people in trendy suits.” That statement probably sounds familiar to you. But nothing is less true. Research shows that as many as one third of gym visitors are over 50.
Tight suits are not the rule. Most people go to the gym to work on their health, not to show off their bodies. In addition, if you choose for example yoga, wide clothing is much more comfortable.
Behave!
Just like in society, there are (unwritten) rules of conduct in the gym.
General
- Maintain good hygiene (use deodorant, wear clean sportswear).
- Be kind to your fellow athletes.
- Behave towards members of the opposite sex.
- Do not wear offensive clothing.
- Show respect for the sports instructors.
- Realize that the gym is not a place to chat for hours, but to exercise.
- In strength exercises, produce as little screaming as possible.
- Do not talk to fellow athletes who are engaged in intense activity.
- Turn off your cell phone.
- Take a water bottle with you.
- Shower after exercise.
When using equipment/materials
- Occupy only one device at a time.
- Neatly wait your turn when using a device.
- Use a towel to cover the device where it comes into contact with your body.
- Clean the used appliance if there perspiration has come up.
- Place free weights on the floor, don’t throw them.
- Tidy up all the materials you use.
