We know, the overweight and obesity worsen the risk of cardiovascular diseases (arterial hypertension, diabetes, atherosclerosis) studies provide us with sufficient evidence. But does this vicious circle become a virtuous circle when it is taken against the grain? This is the question asked by Professor John Deanfield of University College London (UCL).
Good news ! The researcher confirms to us in the journal Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology that it is never too late to decide to take charge. Weight loss, regardless of the age at which one decides to undertake it, has a positive impact on the cardiac risk.
The study examined the impact of weight changes on cardiovascular risk factors on a group of 1,273 British men and women, followed since their birth in March 1946. The results show that the more excess body fat (adiposity ) is long-lasting, the greater the risk of cardiovascular problems later. So far, nothing new under the sun.
There is no age to think about your health
What follows is much more interesting: the study clearly shows that the cardiovascular risk curve tends to reverse and health markers improve for each drop in BMI gained. The cardiovascular benefits are seen over the long term.
For the researchers, this research provides evidence that it is necessary to encourage “strategies of public health and improvement of the lifestyle of overweight or obese people at all ages”.
The pivotal age when women are more likely to gain weight is 38. For men, it’s 44 years old.
