the happinessis health. This is more or less what news reveals research studies published in the journal Applied Psychology: Health and Well-Being. To demonstrate this, the researchers drew on the already existing scientific literature on the subject and found that cultivating happiness and positive emotions improved the immune systems and cardiovascular, as well as the body’s ability to heal its wounds. And for good reason: being happy would help to get rid of harmful behaviors such as smoking or alcohol consumption.
Well-being, an element to be taken seriously
If the link between happiness and health is proven, how do positive emotions affect the body? Debate around this issue is still ongoing within the scientific community and further research is needed. “It is clear from this research that subjective well-being influences health, but we need to know more,” precise Sarah Pressman, professor of psychology and co-author of the study.
The objective of this research is, among other things, to encourage doctors to take a greater interest in the well-being of their patients. “We need to take very seriously that happy people are healthier and live longer, and that chronic unhappiness can be a real threat to health,” concludes Ed Diener, professor of psychology and lead author of the research.
