The hammam, a source of benefits
Originating in Roman times and traditionally used in the countries of the Maghreb and the Middle East, this steam bath is more and more coveted in the West by women (and men) hungry for relaxation. Heated on average to a temperature of 45 ° C, the hammam blows steam, sometimes scented with essential oils, which brings a lot of benefits to the body. “It clears the respiratory tract and promotes humidification of the mucous membranes (sinuses, trachea, mouth, bronchi, lungs, etc.)”, explains Tiffany, hydrotherapist at Thalasso de Cabourg.
The hammam infuses a pleasant feeling of relaxation and lightness that envelops the whole body. Perfect to prepare for sleep after a busy day.
And after sport, why is it good? “The hammam helps to catch your breath. But it also promotes perspiration and relaxes the muscles”, continues the specialist.
Detox ritual, this bubble of well-being excels in eliminating toxins since the steam opens the pores and prepares the skin for exfoliation (to completely rid it of its impurities). This beauty gesture restores radiance to the skin.
What maximum duration?
Even if you are not afraid of the heat, it is not advisable to linger for more than 20 minutes. The right timing to take advantage of these benefits? Between 8 and 20 minutes.
How to avoid any danger?
People with fragile health, women prone to circulatory problems or hypertension should avoid hammams. Apart from these populations at risk, the steam bath does not present any contraindication. But to enjoy it without the risk of overheating you must stay tuned to your body and its sensations. If after a few minutes the feeling of relaxation gives way to a certain weariness or any other feeling of discomfort, we do not force. We slowly come out of the hammam and take the time to sit down or lie down to recover quietly.
What good reflexes when leaving the hammam?
Just outside the hammam, and before the scrub(if possible with black soap), take a lukewarm or cold shower to rinse your body. It rids the surface of microorganisms evacuated by perspiration on the surface of the epidermis.
To optimize the effects of the hammam on blood circulation, you can continue with a visit to a cold water spa (cold water course in swimming pools for example). This hot-cold stimulates and tones blood circulation (vasodilation and vasoconstriction).
And to prolong the relaxing effect, you can lengthen the time that the hammam session lasted.
