Sleeping well is necessary for our body to function properly and to keep us in good health. During this time our body regenerates and repairs itself. Good sleep prevents certain illnesses such as depression, cancer or Parkinson’s and increases the power of the brain in women.
A “more complex” brain
Sleeping well makes you lose weight, improves memory, helps digestion and relieves migraine. According to a study conducted by scientists at the Max Planck Institute in Munich and presented at the Neuroscience Forum in Copenhagen, women increase their intellectual power while they sleep. Conversely, men benefit more from shorter naps.
Earlier this year, researchers at Loughborough University’s Center for Sleep Research proved that women need more sleep than men, due to the increased complexity of their brains. According to Professor Jim Horne, who has studied the issue, “ women tend to be multi-tasking, do a lot at the same time, and are flexible. They use their brains more than men. Because of this, their need for sleep is greater. “
Higher IQ
In order to complete the analysis, the researchers looked at 160 adults and how their sleep affects their intellectual capacity. They monitored the group’s sleep patterns and also performed performance intelligence tests, to assess their reasoning and problem-solving skills.
The study found that sleep spindles, associated with a higher IQ, were stimulated in women when they entered dreamless sleep. In contrast, in men, the correlation was found while they were taking naps. According to Professor Martin Dresler, “ there are many factors involved in intellectual abilities, and sleep is one of them “.
