Regular and high consumption of dairy products, milk, yogurts and cheeses would be associated with higher volumetric bone mineral density and better spinal strength in men, according to the results of a study published in the medical journal Journal of Bone and Mineral Density. In women, the researchers found no significant results.
Researchers from the Universities of Wageningen and Tilburg in the Netherlands in collaboration with the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BDMC) and the Hebrew Senior Life’s Institute for Aging Research (IFAR) in Boston in the United States conducted a study with 2,626 participants, on average 50 to 55 years old, to understand the impact of dairy products on men’s bone health.
Thanks to medical imaging examinations (bone densitometry), the researchers observed that the men who consumed the most dairy products, combining cheese, milk, yoghurt or cream, displayed an increase in bone density and a better strength of the spine. The effects of this association have been shown to be effective regardless of the level of vitamin D consumed.
“This study looked at the consumption of dairy products with bone measurements, which are unique because they provide information on bone geometry and compartmentalization. The results of this study highlight the beneficial role of a combination of dairy products on bone health and these beneficial associations remain independent of the serum status of the vitamin D in a person, ”said Shivani Sahni, director of the Nutrition program and lead author of the study.
