According to a study conducted by a team of researchers from the University of Waterloo, Canada, in 25 years, sugary drinks could be responsible for the deaths of 63,000 people and cost 35 billion euros.
Cause 3 million cases of obesity in 25 years
The health authorities keep repeating: the excess of sugary drinks is harmful to health. But this week, a Canadian study reveals that excessive consumption of these drinks could cause a major social and economic blow. According to this work, relayed by the Heart and Stroke Foundation, soda could kill 63,000 people in the next 25 years.
But how to explain this massacre? Canadians are said to be big fans of sugary drinks. Each year, they consume, on average, 162 liters. According to researchers, this excessive consumption of sugar may cause 3 million cases of obesity, nearly 1 million cases of type 2 diabetes, 300,000 cases of ischemic heart disease, 100,000 cases of cancer and nearly 40,000 strokes.
35 billion euros by 2041
” Excessive sugar consumption is directly linked to being overweight, which increases the risk of at least 11 different cancers Said Robert Nuttall, member of the Canadian Cancer Society. The proliferation of these chronic diseases will not be without consequences for Canadian taxpayers: they estimate the cost at 50 billion Canadian dollars (35 billion euros) by 2041.
The World Health Organization (WHO) recalls that it is necessary to limit the consumption of added sugars to a maximum of 5% to 10% of the calories consumed per day. In a report published last year, it also recommended to tax sugary drinks to reduce soda consumption and reduce the number of obesity, type 2 diabetes and dental caries.
