In general, water is the best option for staying hydrated and healthy, whether you have hypertension or not. But, just as there are foods that help lower blood pressure naturally, certain drinks can also help you manage your high blood pressure. We present to you those which have the potential to reduce blood pressure and improve your cardiovascular health.
#1 Green tea
Green tea contains antioxidants called catechins that help lower blood pressure. It helps remove excess sodium and toxins from the body. But above all, avoid adding sugar to your tea!
#2 Ginger infusion
To prepare this anti-hypertensive drink, cut some fresh ginger and soak it in hot water for a few minutes. You can add a touch of honey for taste (but no sugar).
#3 Hibiscus infusion
Hibiscus tea is known for its potential to lower blood pressure as it contains anthocyanins and flavonoids that reduce hypertension. To prepare it, soak dried hibiscus petals in hot water for 5 to 10 minutes. You can enjoy it warm or cold.
#4 Pomegranate juice
Pomegranate is one of the fruits richest in antioxidants and polyphenols, which act as anticoagulants and can also reduce blood pressure. To fully benefit from its effects, the optimal recommended dose is 500 mg of polyphenols, or 250 ml of juice per day (the equivalent of a large glass).
#5 Chia seed-infused water
Chia seeds are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which help control high blood pressure. To prepare an infusion of chia seeds, soak some in water for half an hour and drink this water. In Latin America, fans of “chia fresca” add lemon juice to the water once infused.
>> To know: When monitoring your blood pressure, it’s essential to keep an eye on the sodium content of the drinks you drink. Avoid sugary drinks, sodas and especially energy drinks which make the heart beat faster and increase blood pressure.
Also watch out for coffee. A recent Japanese study showed that people with hypertension were more sensitive to caffeine than others and scientists recommend not exceeding one cup of coffee per day when monitoring your intake.
