We rarely talk about lymphatic system except in case of circulatory disorders of the lower limbs which are then painful and swollen. This is the famous sensation of “heavy legs”.
And yet, the lymphatic system is essential! In addition to the proper circulation of fluids in the body, it plays a role in our immunity. Explanations and advice from Christopher Vasey, Swiss naturopath, author of The lymphatic system, your new health ally.
“The lymphatic system is one of the main components of the immune system. Indeed, it is not only composed of vessels and lymph nodes, it also includes lymphatic organs including the spleen, the thymus, the bone marrow. These produce lymphocytes, the “little soldiers of the immune system”, describes Christopher Vasey.
The lymphatic system also plays a decisive role in body detoxification. “The lymph carries some of the toxins from the cells into the blood and from there the toxins are directed to the emunctories: liver, intestines, kidneys, skin and lungs”, explains Christopher Vasey.
For all these reasons, it is important to have a healthy lymphatic system. However, it can be weakened for several reasons, including our way of life. “Lack of physical exercise means that the muscles of the lymphatic vessels are unable to propel the lymph which then stagnates. Overeating, especially in fats and sugar, is responsible for too many toxins that our body does not can no longer eliminate”, explains the naturopath.
