The vast majority of French people find it difficult to cut off with their work when they have finished their day.
- One in five people is affected each year by a mental disorder, i.e. 13 million French people.
- The suicide rate in France is one of the highest in European countries of comparable development.
9 out of 10 French people believe that their work has an impact on their mental health, according to a survey for Mocha.care, a specialized support service for companies. Conversely, 92% of the 3,836 respondents also explain that their personal problems affect their mood at the office.
However, the French strive not to show their weaknesses at work, to their colleagues but also to their boss: 76% of employees have never spoken of their psychological concerns to their superiors.
“Health is a whole”
“Even today, we tend to pay attention to our psyche only when it is damaged. Basically, we were never taught to take care of our mental health on a daily basis as we are taught to brush ourselves teeth when you are a child or playing sports. However, health is a whole”, laments Pierre-Etienne Bidon, the co-founder of Moka.care, in a press release.
Only 29% of respondents say they actively take care of their mental health, by consulting a health professional (25%), playing sports (23%) or practicing yoga (6%).
Overall “degraded” mental health
More than two years after the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, the mental health of the French remains globally “degraded”, according to Public Health France. The health agency deplores in particular an increasing proportion of suicidal thoughts. “The health crisis has had a lasting and significant effect on the mental health of the population, particularly in terms of anxiety-depressive symptoms and sleep problems”, add public health experts.
