Researchers from the universities of Leicester and Exeter in Britain say that a minute running a day is enough to improve women’s bone health.
For this study published in the International journal of epidemiology, researchers looked at health data from 2,500 women and compared activity levels (measured by a smartwatch) and bone health (measured by an ultrasound of the heel bone).
The activity must be more intensive than walking
According to this British study, pre- and post-menopausal women who do intense sporting activity such as running for 60 to 120 seconds a day have slightly better bone health (4%) than women who do no activity. What reduces their risk of osteoporosis.
“What we still don’t know is if it’s better to do one to two minutes of running every day or if these minutes can be accumulated twice a week” underlines Dr Victoria Stiles, from the University of Exeter, lead author of the study. “But there is a clear link between this kind of intensive exercise and better bone health in women”.
