“Our only destination… The fight against AIDS“, here is Sidaction’s latest slogan. On the occasion of the World Aids Day, Sidaction takes us around the world, on the theme of illness, in a campaign worthy of a guide for explorers.
“If we do not fight inequalities at the national and international level, all the progress made in 30 years of struggle will only benefit a privileged handful.“said the general manager of Sidaction, Florence Thune. Let’s go to the world, then.
AIDS world tour
First stop: Russia. Behind the postcard hides a historically homophobic country. Until 1993, homosexuality was a crime, until 1999 considered a mental illness… Since 2013, any act of “homosexual propaganda” among minors is punishable by a fine. Blocking the way to all information, the disease is spreading at high speed. Contaminations increased by 75% between 2010 and 2017 reveals the UN observatory, more than a million people infected in the country.
Second destination: Asia! Southeast Asia is the region of the world with the most repressive drug laws. In Malaysia, for example, 13% of injecting drug users have AIDS. Only 39% are aware of their HIV status. An even lower rate in Thailand (20.5%) and the Philippines (29%).
Welcome to Europe. For this destination, Sidaction mentions the difficulties for migrants for whom access to the health system is a real obstacle course. Less care, and therefore more exposure to sexual risks. The campaign points out that this population is more exposed to HIV, without yet having any figures.
