Office workers spend up to 75% of their time sitting, half of which is accumulated over long consecutive periods. However, back pain, muscle degeneration, heart disease, diabetes, colon cancer and even premature death are the risks due to a sedentary lifestyle. To avoid this type of problem, employees who sit in front of their screens all day should get up regularly to spend two hours on their feet. These recommendations were drawn up by a committee of experts at the request of the public agency Public Health England and confirm the conclusions of a large number of studies which incriminate sedentary lifestyle.
Observations already observed
These conclusions confirm a previous british study which revealed that sitting for too long was unhealthy and that workers had to opt for standing to produce daily muscle activity. “Standing therefore allows you to burn 750 additional calories per day, thus consuming 30,000 more calories per year. This is because people who work standing for three hours have higher heart rates, 10 beats per minute higher. They therefore spend 0.7 calories more. That’s 50 calories per hour, ”explained Dr. John Buckley of the University of Chester.
Sedentary lifestyle is harmful to health
For the World Health Organization (WHO), physical inactivity is the 10th cause of death in the world and the 4th risk factor for mortality in the world after high blood pressure, smoking and diabetes. To keep fit and stay healthy, the Organization recommends taking 10,000 steps a day and doing 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity each week. The benefits of physical activity are indeed scientifically proven. Regular sport can reduce the risk of developing breast cancer by up to 39%, the risk of developing colorectal cancer by 26%, the risk of having a stroke by 25% and the risk of diabetes is 34%.
