It is important to respect the rhythm of the child so that he learns the cleanliness.
It is generally between the ages of 2 and 4 that a child learns to be clean. However, if he is a little late, don’t force him, but let him go at his own pace.
Let him do it in his diaper
Contrary to popular belief, if your toddler doesn’t want to poop on the potty, it’s best to let him poop in a diaper. Otherwise, he may hold back and become constipated, which can cause pain when having a bowel movement.
To help him, familiarize him with the potty by putting it near the toilet and explaining to him what it is for. Invite him to sit on it, even dressed, or sit his toy on it. Gradually get him to sit there at regular times, such as when he wakes up, after meals or before a nap or bedtime.
Avoid at this time giving him a toy or a book and encourage him to stay there a little longer if nothing happens but never more than 5 minutes. If he can’t, don’t be disappointed and don’t say anything, let him go about his business. On the other hand if he arrives, congratulate him and compliment him to encourage him.
When should you consult?
If, despite your encouragement, your child over 4 years old refuses to go to the potty, cannot hold back or does not progress in terms of cleanliness, in this case it is best to consult a general practitioner or a pediatrician to try to find the reasons for his refusal or his difficulties.
