Previous studies have already shown that beer can be good for the heart, and that it can be as effective as a paracetamol tablet in relieving pain. But this time, a new study from Dalia University in China shows that drinking beer could be good for intestinal health and the immune system.
Benefits of fermenting beer
“As a fermented beverage, beer is rich in many essential amino acids, vitamins, trace elements and bioactive substances involved in the regulation of many human physiological functions,” the researchers note. “When beer is consumed in moderation, the phenols and other nutrients it contains are fermented and broken down by the gut microbiome, helping to improve gut health and immune system function.”
To be consumed in moderation, of course
However, researchers warn that these benefits only apply to light or moderate drinkers. Excessive alcohol consumption has adverse effects on health.
“Beer can cause serious tissue and organ damage, such as increased intestinal inflammation, endotoxemia and alcoholic liver disease, if consumed inappropriately or excessively” remind the scientists. “However, when alcohol consumption is controlled, the nutrients in beer have a positive effect on the regulation of immune function.”
