On average, Europeans spend 7.26 hours a day in a sitting position. But only 3 in 10 people are aware that this sedentary lifestyle increases the risk of obesity, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, depression, anxiety and cancer. This is what reveals investigation led by the Attitude Prévention association in 8 European countries (Germany, Spain, Finland, France, Italy, Netherlands, United Kingdom).
Because they spend an average of 8:13 sitting each day, Brits are the most sedentary Europeans. They are followed by Italy (7:32) and France (7:24). The most active are the Finns, who sit there for only 5.5 hours a day. It is also in this country that the health risks of a sedentary lifestyle are best known.
Young people more sedentary than their elders
In all European countries, 18-35 year olds stand out from their elders. They spend more time on average sitting each day: 8:19 a.m. compared to 6:53 a.m. for 50-year-olds. Regarding privileged activities, 50% of the youngest cite watching a film, program or series. They also promote cultural and social activities like going to the cinema / theater or going to restaurants / bars.
People aged 50 and over are distinguished by their greater preference for quiet activities such as reading and walking.
