What if a few adjustments in our simple eating habits made it possible to lose weight? According a study carried out by researchers at the University of Surrey in the United Kingdom, shifting the time at which you eat breakfast and dinner can reduce your calorie intake and at the same time, lose fat.
The team of researchers, led by the Dr Jonathan Johnson, compared the results observed on 13 participants, divided into two separate groups. In the first group, they had to eat their breakfast 90 minutes later than usual and, on the contrary, advance dinner time by 90 minutes. The second group ate at their usual times.
Less appetite, less desire to snack
Unlike other studies on the same theme, participants could all eat whatever they wanted, within a certain limit. The study lasted for 10 weeks, with participants taking regular blood tests. At the end of this period of time, they answered a questionnaire.
As a result, people who had changed their eating habits ate less than those who kept the same meal times. 57% of them noticed a decrease in their appetite as well as their tendency to snack, especially in the evening.
“Even though this study is small, it makes us realize that small changes in the timing of our meals can have a beneficial effect on our bodies,” Dr. Johnston explained in the statement. “Lowering body fat reduces the risk of obesity and related diseases, so it’s essential to improve our health,” he adds.
The researchers hope to confirm these results with a new study, on a larger scale this time.
