Volkswagen is currently testing an eHybrid hybrid version of the new Caddy. The plug-in hybrid utility, like its MPV version, could inaugurate a new electrified engine. Its “cousin” the Ford Tourneo Connect could also benefit from it.
During the presentation of the new Volkswagen Caddy, in 2020, Volkswagen said it was considering a plug-in hybrid version of the model, offered in utility and MPV versions. “Stolen” photos of a prototype devoid of any camouflage confirm that the development of such a variant is making great strides.
Volkswagen Caddy eHybrid approaching
A plug-in hybrid Caddy, expected to carry the eHybrid suffix, has been caught testing on Spanish roads. The charging hatch on its left front fender is clearly visible, such as the exhaust silencer under the rear bumper indicating that this is not a 100% electric vehicle. No specific finishing details stand out, which could change between now and the presentation of the final model.

A new rechargeable mechanism at Volkswagen?
The Caddy is based on the Volkswagen Group’s modular MQB platform, like the Golf. The configuration of its eHybrid engine should therefore be close to that of the compact, but one major detail is likely to change: the four-cylinder 1.4 TSI of the Golf eHybrid could give way to the 1.5 TSI Evo with cylinder deactivation, which is more fuel efficient. The electric motor should remain located between the petrol unit and the DGS6 dual-clutch gearbox. Some rumors suggest an increased battery capacity compared to the 13 kWh of the Golf eHybrid, enough to greatly exceed the 50 km of WLTP autonomy in “zero emission” mode. For the utility variant, this would facilitate deliveries in certain city centers that are increasingly hostile to internal combustion vehicles. The Volkswagen Caddy eHybrid could be unveiled before the end of this year. The new Ford Tourneo Connect, technical “cousin” of the Caddy, should also be entitled to a plug-in hybrid variant.
