We know that politics is a taboo subject. A few days before Valentine’s Day and two months before the presidential election, a question arises: can we get into a relationship with someone who does not share the same political ideas as us? According to a recent study, this is not an option for one in three people.
- One in ten French people left their partner because of their political opinions.
- 36% of those questioned do not plan to get into a relationship with someone from a different political side.
During the first meeting, several subjects can be discussed, such as projects, centers of interest or travel. But, during this meeting, some prefer to find out directly about the political side of their potential partner to find out if they have the same values and to avoid unpleasant surprises after several months of relationship. According to investigation conducted among 1,005 French people, more than half of those questioned, or 56%, said they were comfortable talking about politics from the first meeting.
A third of people don’t want to date someone from a different political persuasion
The survey, conducted by dating app Bumble in partnership with YouGov, asked participants if they were considering sharing their life with someone who holds different political views. According to the results, one in three adults surveyed (36%) did not plan and did not see themselves starting a serious relationship with a person who does not have the same political ideas as them.
Among 18-24 year olds, 47% agreed that similar political views were essential for the relationship to work. In addition, one in ten adults said they had broken up with their partner because of political differences.
The French explained that other important topics must be discussed at the first meeting. Among the subjects that can indicate whether a romantic relationship can be envisaged, we find equal pay, the safety of women, the protection of the environment, the fight against racism and sexism.
