- Adultery can cause migraines and heart problems in those who are victims.
According to a new investigationbeing the victim of infidelity on the part of one’s romantic partner often leads to real chronic pathologies.
To study the long-term effects of this ordeal on our bodies, the researchers used data from the Midlife Development in the United States (MIDUS) study, a document that includes information about individuals’ personal relationships, health and demographic characteristics.
Infidelity: what are the physical problems encountered?
The sample selected by the scientists from this source included 2,579 participants aged 33 to 84. All had responded to two waves of the MIDUS survey conducted about nine years apart.
After analyzing their background, the results showed a clear link between partner infidelity and poorer health outcomes.
Even after controlling for factors such as age, gender, income and education level, participants who had been deceived were significantly more likely to report persistent migraines and heart problems.
Researchers have also looked at whether strong support from friends and family could mitigate the health effects of infidelity, but the answer is no.
“Being cheated on by one’s partner can have lasting health consequences, and these consequences can be particularly severe for vulnerable people, such as minorities and those facing socioeconomic difficulties,” explains the director of the study. “People who have suffered from their partner’s infidelity and are struggling to cope should therefore consider seeking help from a healthcare professional,” he believes.
The study, titled “The consequences of spousal infidelity for long-term chronic health: A two-wave longitudinal analysis”was written by Eunicia QW Hoy and Vincent YS Oh.

Given this high prevalence, many researchers have already demonstrated its sometimes devastating psychological effects, materializing in particular in the form of anxiety and depression.
