On the second-hand market, the hybrid is the “third force” behind diesel and petrol. It is Toyota, with its seniority and the extent of its offer, which largely dominates the ranking of the best-selling models with the Yaris. Except on the side of rechargeable vehicles on the sector.
The hybrid is not only progressing on the new market. On occasion, too, more and more of you are seduced by this alliance between a heat engine, most often petrol, and one or more electric machines. But beware, the word “hybrid” brings together sometimes very different technical solutions. Today, it is often used to designate mild hybrid models (mHEV), incapable of moving on the sole force of electricity, such as the Fiat 500, Ford Puma, Suzuki Swift… We are then quite close to a simple Improved Stop & Start, which caused us to exclude these vehicles from our ranking. Alas, it’s not that simple because the gray card makes no difference with more advanced non-rechargeable hybridization (HEV), that of Toyota and Lexus, certain Hondas or Renault Clios and Captur E- Tech.

Toyota in the top five places!
Our partner NGC-Data® was thus unable to provide us with statistics distinguishing the two solutions, which may generate some uncertainty on models such as the Tucson, which leaves the choice between the two systems. Fortunately, this scenario is currently quite rare. The question does not arise for the first five positions, all occupied by Toyota models. With, unsurprisingly, a first place for the Yaris, which is ahead of the C-HR and Auris. Despite their young age, the Renault Clio and Captur are already in ambush, in sixth and seventh positions. But the Captur also exists, since the end of 2020, with a 1.3 l turbo with light hybridization which disturbs its figures a little.
More varied ranking among plug-ins
This problem does not arise with plug-in hybrid models on the mains (PHEV), all of which are necessarily capable of driving on electric for a few tens of kilometers thanks to their large battery. Here, not the slightest Toyota in the top 10, the plug-in Prius arriving only in sixteenth position. It was the Volkswagen Golf that finished first ahead of two French models: the Captur E-Tech plug-in 160 and the Peugeot 3008. Fourth, the GLC has the particularity of also being available in a diesel plug-in hybrid, which accounts for 649 of its 2,309 sales. But the plug-in hybrid remains quite anecdotal on occasion, in particular because of its high prices. Despite a battalion of around a hundred models, this recent and expensive technology only represented around 52,000 gasoline and 2,000 diesel transactions on the second-hand market, compared to nearly 170,000 for conventional hybrids. The three best-selling HEV cars alone even represent more exchanges than all of the PHEVs!
