Between shocking sentences and authoritative arguments, Guillaume Chopin does not weaken in his effort to persuade his reader that the essential oils live their last moments. With his petition for the “Backup of thearomatherapy France and the free use of essential oils”, he has already succeeded in convincing more than 195,000 people that essential oils had “become the number one concern of the French Medicines Agency (ANSM), the “health police “in France”. However, there is nothing to confirm such a thing.
Real arguments?
The author of the petition advances several arguments to support these statements:
- an ANSM document dating from 2016 which “unveils the underground strategy of this organization”
- the ban in 2007 of 15 essential oils on free sale, “reserving them only for pharmacists”
- the harassment suffered by companies producing these oils, such as the company do terra (United States) which saw the landing of the “big boys” of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) at the end of 2014.
In short, pharmaceutical lobbying does not want “the French to understand the incredible power of these natural substances capable of curing 90% of diseases”.
Old provisions totally justified
For the first argument, the ANSM sought to specify and clarify the regulations concerning essential oils. Indeed, essential oils are classified into three categories: cosmetics, sanitizing sprays, and drugs. However, some cosmetics manufacturers tout the health benefits of their products – such as a face cream that can cure a skin problem – and it is in these cases that the ANSM cracks down, because these are not medication.
Regarding the second point, the essential oils concerned can be toxic, cause convulsions or hallucinations. These plants have strong effects and the opinion and advice of a pharmacist are therefore essential. Finally, for the last point, the “big arms” was a letter reproaching the company for saying that their oils could cure diseases such as cancerbrain damage, autismthe disease ofAlzheimer’s and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). And this, of course, without supporting evidence.
Thus, contrary to what the petition claims, the regulations concerning essential oils will not be tightened.
