According to a new study published in Plos One, changing your diet by eating less red meat in particular would save many years of life expectancy.
More whole grains
The researchers also demonstrated that the impact of a newly healthy diet was considerable on young people, seniors and the elderly, even if it decreases with age.
Their calculations thus estimate that modifying one’s diet in the right direction from the age of 20 would increase life expectancy by more than ten years for women (+10.7 years) and men (+13 years). The biggest gains would come from eating more legumes, more whole grains, more nuts, less red meat, and less processed meat.
A useful tool
Switching to this diet at age 60 would increase life expectancy by 8 years for women and 8.8 years for men; even people aged 80 could gain more than three years in this world.
“Understanding the potential of different food groups could allow people to simply and significantly improve their health,” say the study authors. “Our Food4HealthyLife calculator could also be a useful tool for clinicians, policy makers and the general public to understand the impact of nutritional choices on health,” they conclude.
