Pamper your nails, varnish them, file them… Today, both women and men consider their nails as a real fashion accessory, but also as a weapon to boost their self-confidence.
However, behind this desire to break codes with explosive colors or lengths, when an artificial nail falls off or needs to be replaced, no matter how sumptuous, the natural nail is in a terrible state.
Yael Adler, dermatologist and author of “It’s not okay to talk about it”, delivers a few nudges to let your nails breathe.
Let your nails grow (too much)
Visually, having long fingernails slims down the hands. But, in the long run, too long nails will be damaged. The best is the enemy of good !
Use a metal file
To shorten your nails, forget the metal file that attacks them. Opt instead for glass or cardboard files. But above all, be careful not to use nail clippers or scissors. Only the file makes it possible to obtain a truly smooth and homogeneous finish. It will even strengthen the surface of your nails.
Round your nails
Whichever method you choose, favor a straight line to reduce the size of your nails. Start by filing or cutting them perpendicular to the fingers. Leave the corners of the nail exposed: this method aims to avoid any possible encrustation of your nail in your flesh during its regrowth. This prevents inflammation and the risk of ingrown toenails!
Remove cuticles
Precious allies of the nails, the cuticles simply have to be pushed back. These are small skins that protect your nails. They are an excellent barrier to harmful substances. Above all, do not use aggressive cuticle pushers: your nail may no longer grow back properly.
Abuse aggressive varnishes and hygiene products
Like skin, nails are made up of keratin. Using harsh products on a regular basis can cause your nails to break. Favor soft products, and give up those that contain dye, perfume or ultra-foaming active ingredients. Creams, shea balms or coconut oils help maintain the hydrolipidic film of your nails. How about doing your own nail care?
