The nails are bacteria nests. Everyone carries it daily by being in contact with objects such as telephones, credit cards or public transport. While most of the time these bacteria are harmless, infections can sometimes occur and trigger a swelling, pain, or thickening of the nail.
“Studies have found 32 different bacteria and 28 fungi under fingernails“, said Jeffrey Kaplan, professor of biology at the American University at USA Today. And this, regardless of the type of nails (artificial, natural, gel, acrylic or with nail polish): indeed, it is the length that makes decontamination during hand washing more difficult, if not impossible. “There are always bacteria under the nail and you can’t get rid of it.”
One of these studies found a methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) under half of the samples of nails taken, that is to say a gilded staphylococcus which resists even antibiotics. This bacterium can cause an infection of the skin, or a wound, and in the worst case pneumonia, a blood infection or a meningitis.
“You can transmit nail bacteria to your body by scratching, biting your nails, picking your nose and biting your fingers“, continues the biologist. An infection could also, beyond putting your life in danger, leave your nails completely disfigured.
How to keep nails clean?
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, to be as hygienic as possible, nails should be short and the underside should be cleaned frequently with soap and water. “Longer nails can harbor more dirt and bacteria than short nails, potentially contributing to the spread of infection“, can we read on their site.
When cutting your nails, all the equipment – nail clipper or file – must also be clean. Also avoid biting your nails, or even cutting your cuticles, which act as barriers against potential infection. And ideally, keep them as short as possible.
