To lose weight effectively, to each his own technique. But according to a recent scientific study (published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition), the vegetarian diet is more effective than most low-calorie diets in the context of healthy and balanced weight loss.
To reach this conclusion, the American researchers brought together 74 participants, overweight men and women suffering from type 2 diabetes. The participants in the first group followed a low-calorie diet for 6 months (about 1500 Kcal per day ) while the participants in the second group were assigned a vegetarian diet consisting of vegetables, seeds, legumes, fruits and oilseeds. Animal products were limited to 1 plain yogurt per day. The participants were checked at the start of the experiment, at 3 months and then at 6 months.

Conclusion? The volunteers who followed the vegetarian diet lost an average of 6.2 kilos at the end of the experiment, with a reduction in the thigh circumference of about 13.9 cm, against “only” – 3.2 kilos and – 10 cm for volunteers who followed a low-calorie diet. In addition, the reduction in subcutaneous fat was also greater among vegetarian followers.
“We maintain that the vegetarian diet is the best choice when it comes to healthy weight loss,” says Dr. Hana Kahleová, lead author of this work. People who want to take care of their health, improve their metabolism and decrease fat storage in their body should adopt this lifestyle. “
