Their work published in the Stress and health journal were conducted on a panel of 203 adults aged 24 to 76, all of whom were in a relationship and two-thirds had at least one child. The results show that this mental “clash” generates stress that plagues overall health. This private-professional life dilemma gives rise to mental ruminations that affect mood, self-esteem and lead to fatigue, worry and stress. The authors suggest that those affected by this exhausting gymnastics between work and private life to turn to gentle therapies such as mindfulness meditation or yoga for learn to relax and focus on the present moment and those emotions. These letting go strategies could be offered in some companies. “It can be a good return on investment for companies to know how to manage the stress related to the family-work dilemma, because the positive experiences and feelings at home can reflect on the work and vice versa,” the study concludes.
