It is a measure that medical students have been waiting for a long time. Minister of Health Marisol Touraine announced that the remuneration of the guards of external hospital students will be doubled by 2016, during the Congress of the National Association of Medical Students (ANEMF) in Lyon.
This revaluation will take place in two stages: the price of a daycare will first go from 26 to 39 euros gross on September 1, 2015, then to 52 euros gross in 2016. “In the context of controlling expenditure, this doubling is an important step ”, underlined the minister in a speech relayed by AFP. In the end, the remuneration of the guards of external students (4th, 5th and 6th year of medicine) will therefore be doubled by 2016.
For Sébastien Foucher, president of ANEMF, this financial boost “is going in the right direction, but there is still some way to go”. The latter recalled the “precariousness” in which some medical students live. The guards are part of the low-paid internships that externs must do during their course. They earn between 100 and 250 euros per month for a part-time and must perform (r 25 call during these three years of externship before becoming interns.
Currently paid at the hourly rate of two euros “for 12-hour nights, with a lot of activity, medical tension, complex cases”, these on-call services for externs are carried out under the supervision of a more experienced manager (head of department or internal). For Sébastien Foucher, they are above all “privileged training moments” for the student.
