Lipids naturally present in dairy products may help lower cholesterol and cardiovascular risk.
Polar lipids good for health
French researchers have highlighted the beneficial effects of polar lipids on health. In the study published in Gut, they set out to determine whether polar lipids in milk impact absorption, metabolism, microbiota, and markers associated with cardiovascular health. The results showed that cheese, milk, and yogurt may lower LDL cholesterol levels in the blood (bad cholesterol) by acting on fat metabolism. Surprising results after the warnings on dairy products often too rich.
The researchers conducted a study on 58 postmenopausal and overweight women divided into three groups. They gave them a concentrate more or less enriched with polar lipids added to cheese spread. They noted an 8.7% decrease in LDL cholesterol. These trials did not change the composition of the gut microbiota of the participants.
What are the consequences after these results?
These data could change recommendations for consumption of whole dairy products. The results could influence the composition of certain products in the future. Products enriched in polar lipids and depleted in triglycerides already exist in other countries.
The results will undoubtedly make it possible to implement new diets intended for patients with cardiovascular diseases or for people with LDL cholesterol. Polar lipids are able to reduce the absorption of cholesterol by the intestine and can increase its elimination. Studies will continue on other volunteers involving cardiovascular risks but also in other populations without particular pathology.
