March 30, 2012 – The 4th French Breastfeeding Day (JNA) will be held this year on Friday March 30, 2012. Subsidized by the Ministry of Health, it is organized by the French Coordination for Breastfeeding (CoFAM) and will bring together breastfeeding and maternity specialists.
Promoting breastfeeding is at the heart of the National Health Nutrition Program (PNNS). While studies agree on the superiority of breast milk, it seems that just over one in two women would choose to breastfeed in France.
In 2001, the World Health Organization (WHO) had indeed recommended breast milk during the first 6 months of the infant.
Through this day, CoFAM therefore wishes to educate mothers in order to increase the duration of breastfeeding. In 2010, only 15% of babies were still breastfed at 6 weeks of age.
However, CoFAM remains aware of the difficulties that mothers may encounter when they continue to breastfeed, after returning to work, for example. In addition, in 20% of cases, stopping breastfeeding is involuntary and sometimes linked to the mother taking medication.
During this JNA, specialists will therefore focus on information and the real contraindications of breastfeeding, while recalling that this is a highlight in the life of a mother and of her child.
