Prevent and cure fungal nails
A fungal nail is a nail that is infected with a fungus. It is also called ‘fungal nail’. Fungi are present almost everywhere, but moisture and heat can cause them to settle in the nail. A disfiguring face.
A fungal nail infection is the same as the infection that causes athlete’s foot (swimmer’s eczema). The fungal infection usually starts with a white or yellowish spot at the tip of the nail, usually the big toe first. As the infection worsens, the nail’s color changes to yellow-brown.
Infectious fungus
It looks like the nail is getting thicker, but in fact this is dead tissue under the nail that pushes the nail up. The nail actually becomes thinner, brittle and can detach from the nail bed.
The fungus is contagious and is passed from person to person. This mainly happens in public places, such as swimming pools and gyms. Therefore always wear slippers!
To deal with
Fungal nails are harmless and only need to be treated if the infection causes symptoms or spreads to the nail bed or if you find it unsightly.
For the treatment of fungal nails, antifungal agents are used. These agents inhibit the growth of the fungus, eventually causing the fungus to die.
There are cures available that you have to swallow, but there are also ointments and liquids on the market that you can apply directly. It is also advisable to sprinkle antifungal powder in your socks and possibly shoes. Not all fungi die with a wash.
Leave the nail
You can buy the remedies yourself at a drugstore or pharmacy. In severe cases you can take it to your doctor. Fortunately, this is usually not necessary and a few simple measures will suffice.
Wash your feet without soap and dry your feet well, especially between your toes. Wear cotton or wool socks and well-ventilated shoes. You do not need to remove the fungal nail. If the nail is deformed, it is best to touch it up with a pumice stone or a file.
It can take months for a fungal nail to completely heal. It takes a long time for the affected nail to grow out. So it is actually a matter of good care and a lot of patience. At the pedicure you can possibly have an artificial nail applied over your own nail. Then at least it will look nicer.
