Truvia, the zero calorie sweetener from the stevia leaf is already available in the United States. This sweetener, with a sweetening power 200 times greater than that of sugar, is now arriving on the French market. Government authorities have indeed authorized the use of rebaudioside A, its real name, in beverages and foods. Derived from the stevia leaf, a small shrub of South American origin and heavily cultivated in Asia, this new sweetener would therefore not represent a danger to the health of consumers, according to several studies.
Thus, in July 2008, a WHO expert committee working on food additives declared that the consumption of this product would not have harmful consequences on health.
French consumers will therefore soon be able to find Truvia on the shelves.
