Bottas takes pole position against all odds
Valtteri Bottas has just taken pole position in qualifying for the 2021 Mexican GP. Lewis Hamilton will start from second place tomorrow. The Red Bulls still looked very strong in practice, but they didn’t get past P3 and P4.
Q1 and Q2
Stroll opens qualifying with a crash. He spins as he comes out of the last corner and hits the wall with both the front and the back of the car. A red flag appears to clear up the mess. When the session resumes after half an hour, everyone still has enough time to do some quick laps.
Tomorrow most drivers want to start the race on the medium tires in order to have a strategic advantage. That is only allowed if they drive their fastest lap on those tires in Q2. Many drivers manage to finish in the top ten on the mediums. But there are also a number of drivers who will start on the soft tires tomorrow. Everyone from Red Bull and Mercedes will at least start on the mediums.
Q3
In the final twelve minutes of qualifying, the drivers compete for pole position. When the first fast laps are over, the two Mercedes are fastest with Bottas in provisional pole position. There is still plenty of time for a second chance for the Red Bulls.
However, the drivers are no longer able to improve their times during the second attempts. Against all odds, the Mercedes will start from the front row tomorrow. Bottas takes pole position in this qualifying of the Mexican GP. Verstappen does not get further than third place and Pérez starts from P4.
