An investigation was opened after the discovery of two cases of mistreatment in a retirement home in Meurthe-et-Moselle. The 2 residents, suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, were kept shackled in their beds.
Hands tied to each other and to the bed with washcloths taped with plasters, this is how an 89-year-old woman, suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and resident of the accommodation establishment for people, was discovered. elderly dependents (Ehpad) of Saint-Nicolas-de-Port. Following an anonymous report, two health professionals indeed carried out a check on May 28 in this establishment where they brought to light these facts of mistreatment. They would be “proven” for two residents, as admitted by the director of the establishment to AFP.
A judicial investigation is underway following the report of these “serious facts” by the management of the retirement home and a complaint for “mistreatment of a vulnerable person” filed by the son of one of the abused women. The two victims suffer from significant cognitive impairment which prevents them from testifying about the suffering they may have suffered. But an internal investigation has already resulted in the precautionary suspension of two employees of the retirement home suspected for one of being at the origin of the mistreatment and for the second of not having reported it.
The Association of Directors of Establishments for the Elderly (AD-PA) called for sanctioning any proven mistreatment while recalling that “this type of dramatic event remains however exceptional since it stems from individual and isolated dysfunctions”.
