“The Landes Alzheimer village” should soon see the light of day in 2019. 120 people suffering from this neurodegenerative disease and other related ones will be welcomed within it, whatever the stage of evolution of the pathology, including ten patients under 60 years old and 10 in temporary reception .
The Landes departmental council and the Aquitaine-Limousin-Poitou-Charentes regional health agency are behind this unique project in France, made public last year. The purpose of this device is to allow patient care while allowing them a quality of life in a secure environment. The 16 houses and the environment will be adapted to the reality of daily life with the disease: from the landscape which will help in the spatio-temporal identification of patients to the architecture “adapted to people suffering from cognitive disorders with forms offering freedom of movement and identification, attractive or repulsive colors to guide residents, adapted lights”, describes the press release.
A village to make residents feel “at home”
The place is part of a patient support processbased on non-drug approaches and therapeutic activities “allowing the best preservation of the cognitive and practical abilities of residents” and making them feel at home.
We will have to wait until 2019 to judge the results of this project since the work has been delayed.
