Future mothers who suffer from nausea during pregnancy give birth to babies who are healthier, smarter and have less risk of miscarriage and premature birth, according to a Canadian study.
Carried out at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, this work shows that children whose mothers have experienced morning sickness develop fewer birth defects during their development in utero. These babies also score higher than those born to mothers who did not have an upset stomach, according to the results of non-verbal tests.
High hormonal levels
The researchers analyzed 10 studies conducted across five countries between 1992 and 2012 on nearly 850,000 pregnant women to arrive at these results, published by the journal Reproductive Toxicology. The causes of the link between maternal nausea and good health of the baby are difficult to establish, they explain, but they hypothesize that the high hormonal levels help the baby, while causing the nausea, which affects almost everyone. 80% of women.
Women who do not suffer from it are between three and 10 times more likely to have a miscarriage in the first trimester of their pregnancy, says the newspaper The Daily Telegraph. “Our analysis indicates that it makes sense to reassure women who experience nausea because, in the majority of cases, their symptoms can confer a favorable fetal prognosis for their unborn babies”, concludes the lead author of the study, Gideon Koren, quoted by the British daily.
