According to a Norwegian study published in the British Journal of sport medicine, women who practice high-impact physical activity (jogging, aerobics, ball sports …) up to 5 times a week, would greatly reduce the risk of suffering from pelvic pain during their pregnancy.
The study analyzed data from more than 39,000 Norwegian women who were pregnant with their first child between 2000 and 2009. Their average age was 38 (but ranged from 14 to 46). During ultrasound performed during their 17th week of pregnancy, they were asked about the type and frequency of exercise they performed in the 3 months before conception. Then they were questioned, during the 30th week of pregnancy, on the frequency and intensity of their pelvic pain.
Researchers at the Norwegian Institute of Public Health in Oslo (Norway) found that women who exercised three to five times a week before becoming pregnant had a 14% lower risk of developing pain in the stomach. pelvic girdle. Additionally, high-impact sports activities such as running, jogging, orienteering, ball games, and aerobics have been associated with a lower risk of pain.
Pelvic pain in pregnancy: what is it?
The two large bones of the pelvis are connected by a joint, which is not very mobile, called the pubic symphysis, which is reinforced by ligaments. During pregnancy, the body secretes a hormone, relaxin, which will relax these ligaments so that the bones of the pelvis can separate and make room for the baby. But it happens that the spacing of the joint becomes too important, which causes pain in the groin and pubis. Many women begin to feel this discomfort during the 2nd trimester of pregnancy. It is important to talk to the gynecologist or the midwife who follows the pregnancy who will show the movements to relieve.
