The pomegranate tree seduces with its allure and its flowers, a beautiful bright red. “It grows in Mediterranean areas and tolerates drought very well” , explains Bernard Fabre, laboratory manager for Klo-rane plant products. Appreciated for its tangy taste, its fruit is highly concentrated in antioxidants, up to three to four times more than green tea. “As for the bark and roots, they have long been used to treat intestinal diseases, such as tapeworm” , specifies our expert. But it is in cosmetics that the pomegranate is most effective. Because, from leaves to fruit, it is full of molecules with active properties.
Its oil is anti-inflammatory
“At the level of the leaves, we find a high concentration of catechetical tannins. These are recognized for their antimicrobial and astringent action, and for facilitating healing ” , specifies Bernard Fabre. And it is from the seeds of the fruit that we recover a very interesting oil for anti-aging formulas. Because it is rich in punicic acid, which has anti-inflammatory and soothing properties, and which decreases the degradation of collagen fibers. Finally, pomegranate oil maintains very good tissue hydration, thanks to these linoleic and oleic fatty acids. It fixes the pigments of hair colorings
“The skin of the pomegranate is highly concentrated in ellagitannin-type tannins (almost 60% in some extracts). We discovered that they facilitate the step of “mordanting”: it is the process which fixes the color pigments on the hair fiber » , explains Bernard Fabre. The peel of the fruit also contains polyphenols which have great antioxidant activity. They thus preserve the radiance of the coloring, by limiting oxidation. Formulated in anti-aging treatments, these same polyphenols reduce the degradation of tissues exposed to free radicals, and therefore skin aging.
