To keep his throne in the kingdom of SUVs, King 3008 operates a restyling that transfigures its front face. But still ? Response in our first test of the Peugeot 3008 HYbrid 225 rewarded, for a few more weeks, with a bonus of € 2,000 thanks to its plug-in hybrid propulsion.

A restyling is the ideal opportunity to draw up the commercial balance sheet of a model and that of the Peugeot 3008 multiplies the green lights: four years of existence, 800,000 copies sold (+ 300,000 units of 5008, its extended version) and no a year without winning the title of best-selling compact SUV in France. A success that would have exempted him from too marked a remodeling but, as a strategist, King 3008 preferred to anticipate the threat: that coming from within, at the start of 2020, from the very recent Peugeot 2008 … from which he recovered a slew of ‘arguments.
Its front face? Now equipped with a floating and finely ridged grille, and the same luminous fangs framing the shield. Its body? Coverable with the same Vertigo Blue, and with a Black Pack at € 300 which eliminates chrome in favor of black elements (logos, rims, protective strips, window surrounds, etc.). As for the passenger compartment, it receives the same 10-inch central touchscreen instead of 8 and accommodates the latest PSA driving aids (semi-autonomous driving with adaptive regulator with Stop & Go function and lane position maintenance, night vision system). As long as you check the right finishes and / or the right options …

Peugeot 3008 (2020) price
At € 31,050 in call price, the “new” Peugeot 3008 PureTech 130 Active starts at € 800 more expensive than the old one. The additional cost peaks at € 1,000 on certain finishes, now six in number: the Active, Allure and GT levels each receive their Pack variation which makes the 3008 Style and GT Line disappear. Without repeating here the cascade of equipment (detailed on next page), note that it is necessary to wait for the third level to enjoy the new 10-inch touch screen, the fifth for the adaptive cruise control or the rear USB sockets, while the night vision system or the 7.4 on-board charger kW remain systematically optional.
The latter allows, on the 3008 HYbrid 225 and HYbrid4 300, to reduce the charging time to 1:45 on public terminal or Wallbox (the standard 3.7 kW charger peaks at 3:50, compared to 7 hours on a conventional domestic socket). For this first test, we opted for the 3008 HYbrid 225: it starts at € 45,100 in Allure level then climbs to € 45,600 in Allure Pack, € 47,800 in GT then € 49,900 in GT Pack… before a bonus of € 2,000 which will be halved from July 2021. Better to hurry or skip your turn?
Driving
Technically, the restyled 3008 does not evolve. This HYbrid 225 version still supports the 1.6 PureTech of 180 hp by a 110 hp electromotor (housed in the eight-speed automatic gearbox), connected to a lithium-ion battery of 10.8 kWh useful. A coupling that had hardly convinced us during a previous test: frequent jolts during movements at low speed, slight acceleration when the heat engine wakes up despite constant pressure on the right pedal. Nothing similar at the wheel of the restyled 3008, thanks to an electronic update of the energy management.

In 100% electric mode, the 3008 takes off without inertia and gently, then gradually picks up speed up to 135 km / h maximum. To successfully navigate 46 km without consuming a drop of gasolineHowever, we limited ourselves to 110 km / h for 25 km, before dropping down to 80 km / h on a secondary road and 50 km / h when crossing villages. If the distance envisaged is greater, it is better to switch to hybrid mode which further optimizes overall consumption.
The electric propulsion then remains up to approximately 80 km / h, then the heat engine takes over without jerking. If the zen atmosphere invites a smooth drive, the 3008 is also able to accelerate the pace in a straight line, preferably in Sport mode which energizes the throttle response and slightly firms the steering. The revivals benefit here from the accumulation of engines (225 hp and 360 Nm of torque in total) but compared to the PureTech 180, the overweight of 330 kg logically tempers the agility of the chassis in the more sinuous portions. At this rate, the brake pedal also lacks approval, because it suffers from a first “dead” race and then suddenly amplifies its power on hard braking. A frequent fault on electric or plug-in hybrid models …
Therefore, it is better to taste this 3008 at a gentle pace to make its other qualities shine: smooth steering and always manoeuvrable in town (thanks to the small steering wheel), comfortable seats and appreciable suspensions on the road (even if the large 19-inch wheels bring slight tremors at low speed), discreet air noises on the motorway (thanks to the laminated side glazing). And controlled consumption empty battery, even at 130 km / h where plug-in hybrid models sometimes drink without thirst: 7.8 l per 100 km recorded here on the on-board computer.
The fast lanes also reveal the approval of the new lane positioning assistance, more sophisticated than the simple lane maintenance aid delivered as standard: rather than centering the 3008 in the middle of its lane, the system memorizes a position. desired when engaging and facilitates, for example, cohabitation with the two wheels in the congestion. Present in the same equipment pack, the adaptive cruise control also inaugurates the Stop & Go function, which works until the stop and restarts the car without intervention of the driver if the pause does not exceed three seconds. Relaxing, in an accordion traffic …
The night vision system from the Peugeot 508 which, thanks to its infrared camera, detects an animal or a pedestrian on the roadway beyond the range of the lights will remain to be tested, then displays it on the road. level of digital instrumentation. This is the only additional equipment offered by the 3008 against the 2008 … which remains less welcoming.

Competition
Billed between € 45,100 and € 49,900 excluding bonuses, the Peugeot 3008 plug-in hybrid is the most expensive of the PSA cousins: the Opel Grandland X Hybrid 225 oscillates between € 41,900 and € 45,550 and the Citroën C5 Aircross Hybrid, between 39 € 950 and € 45,250. More spacious in the rear and in the trunk, the latter is also more comfortable and is similar to the cabin Ford Kuga 2.5 PHEV, sold from € 40,000. The American remains however the one who covers the most kilometers in electric mode: 56 km on our test route combining city, road and expressway, against 45 km for the SUV of the PSA group.
The other plug-in hybrid proposals are even more expensive. Either because they belong to the premium circle (Volvo XC40 T4 of 211 hp invoiced at least € 47,400 in Business), or because they offer four-wheel drive: BMW X1 25e (from € 46,650), Jeep Compass 4xe 240 ( from 46,000 €). To enjoy it at Peugeot, you have to switch to the 3008 HYbrid4, whose cumulative power soars to 300 hp and the price, beyond € 50,000 (goodbye bonus…). An altitude where the Toyota RAV4 plug-in hybrid evolves, at 52,650 € and 306 hp minimum. To better compare all these models, find them in our plug-in hybrid SUV buying guide.
Assessment of the test
It’s a good surprise that this 3008 HYbrid 225 “2021 vintage”, thanks to a smoother ride that is superior to that of the first plug-in hybrid version tested just before the restyling. The other qualities of the Peugeot SUV remain (compromise between comfort / handling, welcoming and flexible cabin) and are joined by a more attractive presentation and a more modern technological endowment. Unfortunately, you have to aim high to benefit from it (semi-autonomous driving, night vision system or Black Pack only optional in high GT and GT Pack finishes), which does not soften the prices already high from the restyled 3008 …
