A Peugeot 205 GTi 1.9 from 1987 has just been sold at auction for €82,960, a record price which once again demonstrates the speculative craze to which certain youngtimers are now subject. This copy is enough to make fans of the model dream.
Last April 25 marked the start of the Tour Auto 2022, in which our journalists Géraldine Gaudy and Mathieu Sentis have taken part with, so far, some success. For the occasion, Aguttes organized an auction giving pride of place to sports cars. A Peugeot 205 GTi changed hands there to which is probably, and by far, a record price.

Crushed estimates
Icon of its time and of a whole section of the automobile, the Peugeot 205 GTi has always been very popular, particularly in France. It is therefore in the front line on the front line of the soaring prices of youngtimers. Its price has been steadily climbing for several years, to the point that it is not uncommon for some examples in excellent condition to be traded for more than €40,000. But the buyer of the car in question here doubled the cost to afford it, bidding to the tune of €82,960 before the hammer struck. It was estimated between 45,000 and 65,000 €.

The perfect 205 GTi?
Said 205 GTi is like new and in a particularly sought-after configuration. More precisely, it is one of the first GTi 1.9, dating from 1987. Equipped with the “phase 1” dashboard, it draws 130 hp from its engine not yet catalyzed. Its odometer shows 6,928 km, and its complete history is documented. The car has an up-to-date technical inspection showing no faults. The mechanics run like clockwork, and the dark gray bodywork is in perfect condition, like the passenger compartment which combines gray and black leather/fabric upholstery with red carpeting.

An exponentially growing rating
Bearing the chassis number VF3741C8607718365, the car was sold new by a Peugeot dealership in Orléans in 1987. It only changed hands in 2009 following the death of its first owner, returning to a distant cousin of the latter. this. Two years later, after having driven very little, the 205 was sold with 5,831 km on the odometer.

The car then underwent a complete overhaul and then scrupulous maintenance until it was put up for auction in November 2019, already by Aguttes, with 6,719 km on the odometer. It was sold there for €47,524, a record auction at the time, and joined a collection in central France.
Less than three years and 300 km later, it has therefore just brought a capital gain of nearly 80% to its seller. It remains to be seen how far the rating of the Peugeot 205 GTi will climb further…
