The Brazilian politician had to undergo a second operation after doctors left scissors in his body, specifically part of his digestive tract, during his first surgery.
- In Bordeaux, a man with cancer was treated on the wrong side for 11 sessions.
- In Austria, an 82-year-old patient had the wrong leg amputated.
Forceps, gloves, compresses… These various objects have already been forgotten by surgeons in the bodies of patients. This type of medical error is marginal, but very real. For proof: Cleyton Jose Zanattau, a councilor for the municipality of Nova Santa Helena in Brazil, is not ready to forget that doctors left scissors in his abdomen.
A scan reveals the presence of scissors in his digestive tract
On January 20, he went to a nearby regional hospital in Colíder to have a tumor removed from his intestines, according to the New York Post. The operation went off without a hitch. However, six days after the surgery, the politician was not feeling well. He decides to return to the same hospital and performs a CT scan. This examination reveals that scissors are present in his intestines. The surgeons would have forgotten this instrument in his body while they sewed him up. After realizing their mistake, medical professionals immediately removed the tool. According to the nursing staff, Cleyton Jose Zanattau recovered quickly from this second operation.
“I could have died of this negligence”
This is not the first time that surgical errors of this type have been reported. In Marseille, Sylvie, a 48-year-old woman, found herself with a latex glove and five compresses stuck in her belly after a hysterectomy. On April 6, 2017, the patient underwent removal of the uterus. After the operation, she complained of severe pain in her stomach and difficulty in urinating. Back home, the forties is bedridden until April 9. A date on which she expelled from her vagina, in a pool of blood, the “forgotten” objects.
“It was a nightmare. I thought I was giving birth, all alone at home. (…) I had a lot of trouble recovering. After the operation, I had repeated urinary problems because the glove pressed on the bladder. This necessitated sick leave from April to September, as I was unable to go to work. For months, I suffered from insomnia which was just beginning to disappear thanks to the help of a psychologist. I could have died from this negligence”, said, to ProvenceSylvia.
