According to a new survey conducted by YouGov For Codex Labs Among 1,000 French people suffering from skin problems, there is a clear interconnection between this type of condition, mental health and the digestive system.
Skin problems: 66% of French people have already felt social exclusion
Regarding the links between skin problems and mental health, 66% of French people note a worsening of their dermatological concerns during periods of stress. Furthermore, 21% of those surveyed have already felt social exclusion because of their skin condition (including 32% of 18-34 year-olds).
Regarding the links between skin problems and the digestive system, 17% of French people say they notice a worsening of their dermatological concerns when changing their diet, and 15% when they have digestive problems. Conversely, 24% have observed an improvement in their skin by adopting a diet rich in vitamins.
“24% of respondents are affected by acne”
The study also shows that 35% of participants suffer from skin problems, 23% face inflammatory problems and 21% encounter gastric problems.
“24% of respondents are particularly affected by acne. Among them, 45% suffer from acne occasionally, 25% are affected chronically and 24% experience monthly outbreaks,” specify the authors of the survey.

“This study highlights the importance of a holistic approach to health, integrating stress management, a balanced diet and a thorough understanding of the gut-skin-brain axis to maintain healthy skin. In France, it is crucial to better inform consumers about the benefits of probiotics and adapted diets to help improve their physical or mental health,” the investigators write in their report.
“Many health issues can be addressed by correlating solutions for the skin, digestive system, and brain. In other words, careful attention to diet, lifestyle, and mental health are crucial to provide personalized solutions to skin problems. The gut-skin-brain axis is an emerging area of research, demonstrating how foods and the gut microbiota can influence the development of gut or skin diseases, as well as neurological/psychological disorders,” they conclude.
