Microsoft Edge should make Internet Explorer forget. That works out nicely: Edge has now overtaken Apple’s Safari browser in terms of numbers.
Which browser you use is subject to your preferences. Most people use Google Chrome, but Firefox, which is now fairly nailed down, has also had many users for years. If you have an Apple desktop or laptop, it will have Apple’s own Safari browser on it, which will work just fine for most people. In fact, where Google Chrome is huge in terms of users, Safari is number two. At least, stood.
Internet Explorer
Because we haven’t talked about one major player, namely Microsoft. The ancestor of Microsoft also has its own browser. That was Internet Explorer for a long time and… well, there were some downsides to that. Especially the speed with which Explorer operated was nothing to write home about. Explorer was more popular as an internet meme about how slow and bad the browser was than an actual well-used browser. Internet Explorer will be retiring very soon and then it will be over for the lousy browser, but Microsoft didn’t just give up on the browser battle.
Microsoft Edge
Since 2015, the default browser on every Windows computer has been a brand new browser called Microsoft Edge. It should make Internet Explorer forget by being more modern, faster and more trusted. This is of course also the browser that is available by default on every Windows computer, so you don’t have to use Edge just to download Google Chrome straight away. Edge is actually a nice browser for many people, as it turns out.
Microsoft Edge number two browser
Because thanks to a recent report from StatCounter we have the figures of worldwide browser usage. It is then about the market share of each browser. As you can expect, the hegemony of Google Chrome is not to be underestimated: two thirds of the total (66.64 percent). Below that, the numbers are closer together. 9.61 percent for Apple’s Safari and 10.07 percent for Microsoft Edge. This makes the Microsoft browser the number two browser in the world for the first time in a long time. Well, Edge is still relatively unbeatable compared to Chrome, but it shows that Edge still scores.
Chromium
Incidentally, the irony about it is that Microsoft Edge at first seemed to be doing the same thing as Internet Explorer. Edge was supposed to be built on a unique browser engine, but that didn’t catch on. The current version of Edge, heavily updated in 2018, has the Chromium engine as its engine. Yes, indeed, the same basic approach as Chrome, so. Not surprising that it scores if the basic approach is the same as the browser with 66 percent market share.
Edge thus catches on and knocks Apple off the throne, even though Google is still far out of reach. Well, as long as you have the choice.
