We talk so much about the shortage of nurses in hospitals that it is hard to imagine that some of them are unemployed. And yet, the number of registrants continues to increase.
More and more nurses registered with Pôle emploi
Thanks to a study published on January 24 by the DREES (Directorate of Research, Studies, Evaluation and Statistics), we see that the proportion of registered nurses who are unemployed continues to increase since 2010. In 2017, it represented 4.2% of practicing nurses.
The numbers are not dramatic and are actually lower than the unemployment rates for many other occupations, so why worry? Because’they have been rising steadily for several years. Between 2010 and 2017, we went from 8,060 to 21,030 registered with Pôle emploi.
Longer delays to get a first job
The study tries to understand the origin of a rather contradictory phenomenon when we see the lack of personnel in hospitals! We observe that the deadlines to get your first job after leaving school (IFSI) are getting longer. In 2013, “ 74% found their first job in less than a month, compared to 85% of 2007 graduates »Specify the authors.
But all is not dark and the enrollment rate curve stagnates after a few years: three years after leaving school, 96% of newly graduated nurses have found a job. Another difficulty for the profession: the rate of long-term unemployed is increasing : ” the number of nurses registered with Pôle Emploi for more than a year has quadrupled between 2009 and 2017. “
