Toothpaste, soap, moisturizer, shaving cream… 60 million consumers have tested and deciphered the composition of 93 commonly used products and their results are appalling: 48, or more than half of cosmetics, would contain unwanted ingredients.
Among these doubtful substances, the magazine lists perfumes, dyes, preservatives (parabens, phenoxyethanol, a chemical preservative which has a detrimental effect on the liver and blood), allergens (methylisothiazolinone and methylchloroisothiazolinone), endocrine disruptors…
“When we know that a cosmetic can incorporate ten to twenty different molecules, sometimes even more, we can estimate that over 24 hours, one hundred to two hundred ingredients have been in contact with the skin”, indicates 60 million consumers.
Dangerous cosmetics: brands pinned down
In its investigation, the magazine points to a few brands due to the presence of undesirable substances in some of their products.
For example, shower gels Occitane or Fa have been pinned down by the National Consumer Institute (INC) because of the presence of ultraviolet. Quite astonishing for products not intended to protect the skin from exposure to the sun.
Also, the toothpaste Colgate would contain Triclosan, an antibacterial ingredient suspected of acting as an endocrine disruptor and banned since 2014 by the European Commission.
Bet on organic cosmetics
60 million consumers also points out that all price ranges are affected. No need to buy high-end beauty products thinking that their formula is harmless. In reality, they do not offer more guarantees than low cost cosmetics.
The only brands that really try to minimize the risks by respecting rigorous specifications during the manufacture of cosmetics are organic.
You know what you have to do from now on: “stop buying leading or high-end brands with your eyes closed”.
