Ophthalmology is the big winner of the 2013 list of specialties chosen by medical students. On the other hand, psychiatry and general medicine are at the back of the pack.
According to a 2013 report of the Directorate of Research, Evaluation Studies and Statistics (Drees) released on Monday, ophthalmology is the preferred field of medical students. Indeed, a majority of future interns admitted to the national classifying tests (ECN) turned to this specialty. Radiology, dermatology and cardiology are also high on the charts. “The most popular disciplines are generally medical specialties whose dominant mode of exercise is for the most part liberal”, underlines the study by Drees.
General medicine unattractive
On the other hand, general medicine, psychiatry or even occupational medicine are not popular: as in 2012, positions in these specialties remained vacant. They are in fact the most poorly classified specialties in terms of attractiveness.
The Drees specifies all the same that general medicine manages to recruit “at all levels of classification because the number of positions to be filled is greater. »Of the 3,799 general practitioner positions available, only 168 remained vacant, against 251 in 2012 (4.4%)
Pediatrics for women, neurosurgery for men
The distribution is not the same between the two sexes. Three quarters of women choose, for example, gynecology or pediatrics, while men (over 60%) prefer to specialize in nuclear medicine, neurosurgery or anesthesia-resuscitation. The major of the ECN has opted for general surgery.
