As of September 2018, more than 250 measles case have been reported among residents of Williamsburg, a neighborhood in Brooklyn (New York) and the number continues to grow day by day. In this ultra-Orthodox Jewish neighborhood, many residents are not vaccinated for religious reasons but to block the road to the epidemic, the only solution remains the vaccine. The city authorities therefore tried to convince parents to vaccinate their children by denying them access to nurseries or nursery schools if they were not immunized against measles.
Already 285 cases of measles in New York
But faced with the spread of the epidemic and the strength of the anti-vaccine movement, the mayor of New York, Bill de Blasio, has just decreed state of health emergency. This executive order requires unvaccinated people living in Williamsburg to receive an injection against measles. They also oblige all parents of children under 6 months to have them vaccinated within 48 hours.
The only exceptions will be granted to children who are immunized or who cannot be vaccinated for health reasons. The mayor said the city would eventually issue a fine of $ 1,000 for residents refusing to comply with the directive.
Since the start of the year, 465 cases measles have been reported in the United States, including 78 new cases just last week, the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention said.
