SUVs drive the global automotive market, and Mazda understands this well since its CX models now represent the bulk of its sales. They allow this still independent manufacturer to survive and continue to offer, among other things, its iconic MX-5 roadster. So it’s an SUV avalanche that Mazda announces today, the Japanese firm promising five new elevated vehicles which will be distributed among its main markets between 2022 and 2023.
A seven-seater plug-in hybrid CX-80
Mazda announces for Europe the CX-60 and CX-80, which will be added to the existing range. The second will offer seven places. Both will be based on a new architecture with a longitudinal engine. Although this remains to be formalized, the transmission should therefore operate by default at the rear wheels; all-wheel drive should be offered.
The CX-60 and CX-80 will initially be offered with a plug-in hybrid engine, Mazda’s first on the Old Continent, which will combine a gasoline inline four-cylinder engine with an electric motor. Then two 48 V light hybrid in-line six-cylinder engines will enrich the offer. It will be a SkyActiv-X petrol unit (compression ignition under certain load and speed conditions) and a SkyActiv-D diesel. Apart from these first elements, the technical characteristics of these SUVs remain to be known. The next generation of the CX-5 and Mazda 6 is expected to take over the architecture of the CX-60 and CX-80. Mazda is also announcing that it is moving upmarket with these future models.
In North America and a few other markets outside of Europe, Mazda will launch the CX-70 and CX-90, which will be positioned in the same segments as the CX-60 and CX-80 but will be more spacious. thanks to an upper width which is not very suitable for “ narrower roads and smaller parking spaces From Europe and Japan according to the manufacturer. These SUVs will also use Mazda’s new large vehicle platform, and they will be offered across the Atlantic with a six-cylinder turbo petrol among other engines. The CX-90 will replace the CX-9; the CX-70 will enrich the offer.
Mazda finally formalizes the imminent arrival of the CX-50, another additional model, which will be presented in November 2021. But against all expectations, this SUV taking over the technical basis of the Mazda 3 and CX-30 will not be offered here. Its marketing is only planned in the United States, where it will be produced.
The MX-30 with rotary extension in 2022
Mazda is aiming for carbon neutrality in 2050 and intends to offer a fully electrified range by 2030, which involves a wide range of electric vehicles alongside hybrids. In the first half of 2022, Europe will be entitled to the MX-30 with a range extender, which will carry a thermal engine with rotary piston to reinforce the battery to supply the electric motor. Then from 2025, it is a range of 100% electric models that Mazda will deploy from a new platform exclusively “zero emissions”. The pace of launches promises to be sustained at Mazda for the coming decade.
