Ten days after the court ordered the continuation of treatment, one-year-old Marwa came out of her artificial coma. The father assures us that she is making progress every day.
Little Marwa’s father is overjoyed. Ten days after justice ordered the continuation of care, the little Niçoise, plunged into an artificial coma since September 25, woke up on Tuesday, her father announced in a disturbing video on his Facebook page “Jamais sans Marwa”.
The one-year-old girl was admitted to the Timone hospital in Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhône) more than a month ago, after being hospitalized at the Nice University Hospital for a devastating infection, followed severe neurological and cardiac disorders. The Marseille medical college had unanimously decided to disconnect the respiratory system that keeps the little girl alive, convinced that Marwa would suffer from serious disabilities if she woke up.
A stop of care refused by the family who seized the administrative court. Justice then granted the family’s request and demanded that a medical expertise be carried out by two neurologists and a pediatric neurologist. These experts will have to comment on the irreversible neurological lesions, the prognosis of the child and on the interest of putting an end to the therapeutic relentlessness, or on the contrary to continue the active therapies. It is on the basis of their conclusions that justice must ratify or not the decision of the Marseille team.
Hope sign for the father
But little Marwa woke up. In the video uploaded by her father, she can be seen with her eyes wide open and seemingly following the camera. “My darling daughter is finally starting to wake up … I am so happy to have moved heaven and earth to see this little smile that I missed so much”, writes Mohamed Bouchenafa.
The baby continues to receive care, and seems to “make progress every day”, assures his father, who sees “signs of hope”. Contacted by our colleagues from Nice morning, the doctors of the hospital of Timone did not wish to comment on the awakening of the child.
